Sonburst
Canadian metalheads Sonburst seemed to me as your typical metal band at first. Since I listened to their EP however I am pretty much proved wrong since I found they mix death and progressive metal incredibly well.
Opening track Parallel Dream Omen starts of with a long intro played very well on the guitar, it had me in anticipation of what sort of vocals were to come so I was very taken aback when I heard the harsh vocals. I did like the guitar riffs in the middle of the song, they worked well with Cody Ford's vocals on top.
The second track Providence Among Angels blends shredding guitar riffs and harsh vocals blend together well like the previous track on the album. For me this song had a clearer chorus as you could hear the title of the track clear as day, I also like the use of keyboards in this song. I also heard clean vocals on this track showing the band's progressive side.
Weeping Willow had such a beautiful intro where we see a lot more progressive and less death. This song does show aspects of the band's softer side which I liked a lot about the track. The death part comes back in a slower form which was also great to hear and I must say a band that shows an eclectic selection of songs this early in their career tend to do very well. I liked this track the best as this one showed the clear blend of progressive and death metal.
Overall this selection of songs have been interesting to listen to, as I think their mix of two key genres in metal has worked well and it is very original.
