The Stonewall Silence
We were recently contacted by The Stonewall Silence, an anything goes metal band based out of Liverpool. Having formed in 2009, the guys are working to create their sound, collaborating with many other musicians and forming a sound which, as they say, means that anything goes. Having sent us through details of their EP, Divide To Conquer, we figured we’d see what was on offer from the guys!
Opening with Do Unto Others things immediately take a turn for the heavy, opening with a roaring guitar line before ushering in the gravelly and dark vocals. Fast paced and unrelenting from start to finish, this is the sort of music which is going to get people moving, pits forming, and people loving what they’re hearing. Despite the all out heavy approach there’s a definite sense of melody flowing through the music here, taking a sound which can all too often become a mash up of distortion and keeping things clear, keeping the sounds of the elements coming through so you can hear everything going on. There’s an industrial feel to the music here as well, somehow adding in elements to their sound which keep you guessing and wondering what’s going to come up next. Most striking though has to be the moment where everything calms down, cools off and we’re left with an acoustic sound to keep things moving – it’s a clever moment and one which shows that these guys seriously understand what it is they’re doing.
Moving into Subterfuge there’s once again a display of what these guys can do, throwing down into a fast paced melee of hammering guitar lines, pounding drums and a heavy, rumbling bass line. The vocals seem to chant out over the backing music on this track, almost leading you through the track and making sure you’re paying attention still – it works because it keeps you engaged from the word go. What really stood out to me on this track was the guitar work, somehow once again upping the bar for the intricate work before throwing down into even heavier riffs, it’s a mix done well! The vocals also stand out here, contrasting at moments but always keeping them clear enough to be heard and understood, once again almost telling a story throughout the track and keeping you involved.
Closing with The Art Of Conversation everything takes a moment out to let things build, this time opening soft to lure you into a sense of safety before throwing down and showing that there’s no release until the band are finished with you. Slow and heavy, this final track on the EP marks a moment which will convert anyone who had their doubts, make everyone listen and show that live, these guys are going to be one hell of a band to behold. Somehow making a slow and heavy track catchy, this final moment does exactly what it’s supposed to do and leaves you wanting more.
Personally, I really like the sound that Stonewall Silence have achieved, it’s got the mix of heavy and melody which you want to hear and enough power to keep you satisfied. At all times on this EP it’s clear that we’re dealing with a band who are starting out, really finding their feet almost but at the same time, allowing their music to do the talking for them. I look forward to hearing what comes next from these guys as based on this, it could well be quite simply awesome.
