Temerus
Plymouth based Temerus were awesome enough to ask for a swift review to be posted of their stuff. Seeing as they said they’d be honoured if we could have a listen we didn’t really see how we could say no, so had a listen!
The Crusade Against Invasion opens crunchy, sludgy and heavy, using clean vocals to add in a contrast again the backing music. Different levels of vocals are underpinned by different levels of guitars, creating a catchy yet heavy sound throughout this track. Throughout the track, the drums continue to push the track ever onwards, creating a sound which would be at home against some old skool metal as well as in the modern scene. Straight away, I found myself liking what I was hearing, the sound is unique but amazingly catchy throughout. As well as this, the musicianship throughout is amazing, there’s some serious ability here.
Epidemic opens with buzzy radio sounds, all of which create an air of unease before the guitars kick in opening the track up fully. Again using the rolling drums and fuzzed up guitars, this track powers forward making everyone listen and pay attention. Breaking down during the chorus, Temerus have used different elements throughout this track to create a depth which fully develops the bands ability – much heavier than the previous track but still maintaining that catchy edge which seems to define the sound these guys have achieved. By the time Reclamation kicked in I had already made my mind up that this was a winning recipe being shown off here, heavy assed metal combined with that catchy edge. This track is another example of this in action, using rolling drums and heavy guitars with clean and roaring vocals combined to add depth. Again catchy during the chorus, the lead line of the guitars is kept in the middle of the mix, underpinning everything else whilst not being too over bearing. In all, this is another track which shows off just how well these guys can do what they do. Listen to it and you’ll see – heavy, clean, roaring, singing, lead solos, strings and plucked guitars, it’s all there yet it all combines and works well!
Massacre (promo track) follows on from Reclamation, a short example of what is to come I feel! My only problem here – I want to hear all of it!
On A Blue Ocean finishes the track selection, opening with clean guitars and vocals, there is a far more emotional edge to this track. As it built I found myself questioning what was to come from this, how would it progress or would it stay this clean? The answer is simple, the band create their own sound and move with it. Using clean guitars and vocals they create this emotional story which tells a story as it progresses onwards. Does this track work as a final track here? I’m not sure. What I do know is that this track is an achievement in its own right as it shows that this band is capable of producing music of different styles depending on what they want to play – something which is quite often lacking from bands who stick to their one style.
I for one can’t wait to hear what this band can do with a proper recording session! I think if they were to book into a studio and get some proper recording time with a good producer then they’re going to produce something pretty special.
