The Breach
We were recently contacted by The Breach, a rock band hailing from Cambridge who formed in 2008. Having already received critical acclaim for their single, Siren, which was released in april of 2011, the band have made their debut album, Always, Always, available to hear in its entirety on their website. As such, we thought it was only right we check out what was on offer from these guys!
Opening with Bind You, there’s a real sense that this band have gone for an atmospheric style of rock, opening with some smooth guitar lines accompanied by a hard hitting bass line, almost building up to the opening of the track. Gradually turning into an almost chunky riff without becoming over bearing, soon the vocals are ushered in and leave you with no doubt that these guys have got a clear approach to their music. Almost relaxed yet combined with enough energy to keep the listener engaged, this is a track which is going to pull you in and make you want to hear what else the band can do. The same theme continues into Looking For Iseult, once again opening with a chilled out feel and forming a track which doesn’t quite achieve the preconception of a rock theme, instead forming a track which is going to allow you to simply listen and enjoy.
Without You is a point on the album which everyone needs to make sure they listen to, once again opening with a soft guitar line and crafting a track which moves towards the more emotional side of things. Once again atmospheric yet upbeat, this track confirms the bands status as one to watch out for, continuing to keep the listener engaged track by track as the album progresses. I particularly like the lyrics within this track, they’re emotional without becoming clichéd, allowing you to simply take them on board and enjoy what you’re hearing. Single Siren comes next, opening far more upbeat than previous tracks yet still keeping a sense of melody and rhythm firmly in place. Jumpy and energetic, this is a track which is crafted for the live scene and one which is going to lift you from the chilled out mood of previous tracks and fill you with energy. Another high point on the album for sure, it’s clear to see why the band have been complimented on this one.
As if to show what they can do, Eight Days opens in dramatic fashion, full of guitars, bass and drums which are going to fill your ears and make you reach for that volume up button. Energetic once again, this is another track which is going to make you want to get out and check these guys out live, fuelling the audience with the jumpy guitar and roving bass line which completes this track. With A Sigh is almost a shock then when it once again returns us to the more chilled out approach of earlier tracks. Acoustic and relaxed once again, this is another emotionally tinged track designed to allow you a moment of reflection. Almost as if to contrast things once again, The Day Has Come is soon upon us, opening with an Ocean Colour Scene feeling and crafting a far more upbeat track once again. Throwing in some funky guitar lines and some organ notes to keep funk firmly in place, this is a track which once again lifts you from the reflection and gets you moving, it’s chilled yet somehow upbeat and funky – it’s a clever mix and a moment on the album which I thoroughly enjoyed personally!
Closing with Greener, there’s no doubt left in my mind that this is going to be a band to keep an eye on, one which has got a good thing going already and just needs to get their name out there some more! As a closing track, this seems to encompass the sound of the band in one carefully crafted 6 minutes of music. Slow yet full of energy and power, this track closes the album leaving you with a taste for the band, making you want to hear more and to see what they can come up with next!
I’ve been quite struck by The Breach personally, their sound is relaxed whilst somehow keeping a sense of pace running through it, allowing the listener to move through different moods along with the band as the album progresses. Sure, there’s going to be people out there who say ‘it’s not heavy enough’ or ‘it’s too out there’, but I reckon this is going to be one hell of an album if they can just get word out there. The ingredients are all here, from chilled moments to moments filled with energy, I just can’t wait to see how they follow on from this one!
