The Event
Saying they’re a rock band which is going to blow your mind AND the roof off of every show they do, The Event from Stoke On Trent are setting out with an approach to music which is refreshing to hear. Having developed their sound over 10 years of playing instruments, the band have refined their skills and are recording their album ready to take the scene by storm. The key thing here which intrigues me though is their influences of pop/rock/metal/blues/rap, which basically covers pretty much everything – so this should be interesting!
Opening with Waking Heaven there’s an initial suggestion that this could be an almost disjointed approach to things, but that soon changes! Moving into an anthemic track akin to the massive rock bands of the early 90’s, this is a track which is going to have you singing along, moving along and generally immersing yourself in their sound. Balancing the key elements throughout the track so you can hear all of the different parts of the band, the sound here is both fresh and refined whilst oozing raw energy, it’s a clever mix which re-ignites that inner love for music within you, it’s like stepping back in time to when you were first introduced to rock music and you got that little lift of excitement, it’s also a hell of an introduction to a band!
Get Up Dance! follows on opening with a synth line akin to a very famous Queen song but soon moving into the realms of funky downright dirty rock music. Once again balancing all of the instruments within the band to create a sound which accentuates each and every one of them, you’re presented with a track which encourages you to exactly what the title suggests, gets you out of your seat and gets you moving along with the band. Not relying on the distortion pedal to create the power in the track and instead opting to create a classic sound tinged with a new and updated approach, this is a track which is surely built for the live scene. It’s got that sound which is going to pull you in and command you to do their bidding – which in this case seems like having a good time and throwing some shapes in the venues – even writing this in my office I feel inclined to get up and begin moving!
Finishing the selection with Fly Or Fall, things seem to take a different route, almost sounding more laid back yet dark than the previous tracks. Ballad like in some ways, reflective in others, this track closes the selection here and leaves you with a serious taste for the band, it’s almost like a grand finale to things. Moving away from the soft opening notes and once again launching you into a funk fuelled mix of hammering guitar and drums all based around a soaring vocal line, anyone who isn’t singing along and throwing out some air grabs by the end of this track clearly hasn’t played it loud enough! As a finishing track to a selection I think it does the job perfectly, leaving you wanting more and immediately reaching for the rewind button.
The Event are a difficult band to summarise, their sound is both classic and yet fresh, raw and yet refined, energetic and reflective, all the time keeping melody at the centre of proceedings and making sure their tracks are accessible to listeners. Sure there’s elements of power within the tracks and clear references to their influences, but over all what you’ve got here is a band who could happily sit along side mainstream rock bands whilst still being credible enough to appeal to the harder fans, it’s a clever mix and it works well. This is only 3 tracks from the band, but this is an album I need to get my hands on!
