I caught up with The Jezabels at Metro’s City in Perth on 5th June.
Today is the day that I will break with my strict reviewer protocol. Am I going to write in the first person? – I am. Am I going to use a little mild bad language? – Hell Yeah. And am I going to wear my critic’s hat? – Too right.
The venue for tonight’s gig is Metro City, owned and managed by one of Australia’s most notorious gangsters. It’s a Tuesday night and the place is mobbed, packed very nearly to capacity. Unusual, for this venue and for a weeknight. The crowd are a well dressed, good looking group, ages ranging mostly from 20 to 35. With an obvious majority favoring the fairer sex. That’s not to say the boy’s were not represented and very well presented too. Yes, there were lots of girls who love girls, who love boys, who love boys. Those particular lyrics are now lodged firmly in my head.
The band arrived on stage and Hayley Mary or Mary as she is more commonly known steps straight into her front woman alter ego. There is no doubt that she is physically beautiful and wearing a sheer black body stocking that covered her entire body, her silhouette is stunning. The backdrop for the band was simplistic, no screens or elaborate visuals, just a unique and modern on stage lighting rig that had some stunning effects. As with other artists of late, Mary did not engage in conversation with the audience until after the 3rd track. In fact throughout the set there wasn’t much audience, band interaction at all. The male members of the band Drummer - Nik and Guitarist – Sam are more than adequate musicians, but Heather on Keys is a genius. Most of their tracks use keys and effects, as the foundation of their sound and it is usually multi dimensional. I couldn’t hear a single error throughout their set, Heather is a fearless and flawless player, impressive and talented. Their set lasted for 1 ½ Hrs, the crowd sang and danced throughout, fans were consistent during the set, no stand out reactions to a particular song. Mary rocked out tune after tune, and on the eve of their Asian tour used various vocal apps on her mic to preserve her voice for the next month of shows. It wasn’t till the epic encore that Mary really interacted with the crowd, carefully standing whilst still singing upright on the shoulders of the fans front stage. It was an incredible sight. Tahlia was unable to get this shot because the venue management advised her about 20 minutes earlier to stop taking pictures. So this is where I feel the need to have a bitch about the ignorance of management and security at some music venues. Professional photographers such as Tahlia never use a flash at a live event. They work with the stage lighting. It’s only the fans that bring along their phone and camera’s and flash away without consideration. AMN missed out on the shot of the night as a result.
If you haven’t heard The Jezabels, I urge you to investigate their music further. They are indie and they have a rock edge, the lyrical content is educational, the vocals are dramatic, Mary admits one of her influences is Kate Bush and she show’s hints of her vocal style and range in several of their songs. It makes sense that this band has a broad and intelligent fan-base. It’s great to see that they have so many fans in Perth, and that those fans are so hungry for the bands live sound they come out in droves on a Tuesday Night.
