The Jigsaw Murders
According to their bio, The Jigsaw Murders came about when Adrian started driving himself and others insane as he went about writing what he considered to be the best god damn songs the world had ever heard. Finally recruiting a band to work with him (although it sounds as if it took some convincing!), the band was born and the ‘finely tuned ass kicking machine of a band’ we have before us were ready to go. Having now released their EP, You Vs Me, they got in touch to see if we could check things out – which as always, I was more than happy to do!
The Monster In You greets us and signals the beginning of the EP, throwing us straight into a rock fuelled feeling of dark fun time rock n roll, it’s a good start! The female vocals which come into take the lead come as a shock initially but soon meld into the backing track, the feeling of the track continuing to be one of jumpy, rocky goodness! Catchy yet off beat and a little out there, the sound which this band has achieved is well beyond what I had expected, somehow taking a genre of music and making it their own, developing their sound whilst you’re listening to ensure that you feel a part of things – and somehow managing to still craft a damned fine rock track whilst they’re at it! Sexy Rexy follows much the same sort of recipe, once again basing everything around the raucous backing track whilst the lyrics are spat out over it. The progression of the track makes it something which you can well imagine seeing on the live scene, something which is going to get the crowds involved and make them want to hear more!
Scream If You Want To moves us away from the upbeat tempo of things and throws us into a far more solid rock track, crafting a sound which is much more raw yet is still identifiable as their own. This powerful approach to rock is something which is going to help these guys get out there some more, the music is perfectly suited for the live scene and the sort of thing which you can well imagine seeing being played on a festival stage. That said, there’s enough of a commercial edge here to make this the sort of thing which could also get some serious airplay on the radio! Closing with You Vs Me (Vs You) the band end on a high, once again crafting a track which is based in rock n roll with a funky edge to keep it moving. This is quite possibly my own personal favourite track from the EP, simply because it’s got that edge which suggests people won’t rock out to it, but instead that they’ll dance and love every second of it – it’s a great ending to a solid EP.
The Jigsaw Murders won’t be to everyone’s taste, but to those who do like this style of rock they’re going to be a band which they’ll want to hear a lot more of. Personally, this is the sort of thing I want to see on a live stage, the sort of band who command a good presence and craft a sound which is refined yet hard hitting and fun at the same time. Considering this is just 4 tracks, there’s a lot more still to come from these guys – so this is going to be one to watch out for! If you want to see for yourself, check out their EP at http://thejigsawmurders1.bandcamp.com/ and download it for yourself!
