The Ocean's Eyes
The chaps in The Ocean’s Eyes don’t give a lot away about themselves on their FB page, other than introducing themselves and saying they play a mix of alternative/pop-punk/rock straight out of London. They were kind enough to drop us an email to let us know about some of their tracks so as always, I figured I’d let the music do the talking and hit play to see what was going on!
Keep Me A Secret opens with a really upbeat and jumpy sound, the sort of thing which moves towards the pop-punk style but holds back from becoming too over the top. Adopting a more Biffy Clyro style as the track gets going, there’s more than a simplistic tag here, instead throwing out syncopated beats, moments which are full of catchy hooks, and crafting a track which genuinely sounds more accomplished than I had expected. Room Of Red continues this approach, this time throwing in a more raw sound and showing that this is a band who aren’t afraid of showing they can do harder stuff when they want to. Once again adopting a more complex approach to the track, I love the way that they don’t just go through the motions of the track, instead crafting something which is interesting and intricate throughout, and keeping you guessing as to what’s going to come next. The chorus of this track is the key, and the sort of thing which is sure to get people singing along, joining in, and wanting to see more and more of these guys.
A Long Time Coming once again differs the style and approach of the band, showing that there’s a harder edge lurking behind the scenes just begging to be let out. The soaring vocal line combines with the hard hitting guitar line of this track and forms into something which is upbeat, catchy and powerful from start to finish. This is a live anthem in the waiting, the sort of thing you can well see being played on a festival stage, and the sort of thing which is going to get more and more people on side with the band. This was also my personal favourite track from the selection, there’s just something about it which makes me want to hear more and see more of the band. I Scream Your Name once again continues the harder hitting approach of the band, showing that sometimes a distorted guitar can still sound melodic and accessible to the listener. Catchy once again, this is the sort of track which could get some serious radio play, lurking somewhere between the alternative and pop-punk label and showing that when combined in the right manner, the outcome can be something pretty special.
Closing the selection with Overcast we’re shown one final side of the band, finishing on a track which holds a certain 80’s vibe in some ways, yet still manages to hold a real freshness and power that’s going to secure these guys a slot as a band to make sure you check out. Fast paced, melodic, catchy and straight to the point throughout, this is another high point and a track to make sure you check out if you get the chance.
I love it when I come across a band that I know nothing about, and they turn out to be one that I’m going to keep an eye on, and that’s what’s happened with The Ocean’s Eyes. From start to finish they’ve shown that they understand their craft, know what they’re doing, and can craft songs which are both heavy and melodic at the same time. Some might call this radio friendly rock, and others might agree with the pop-punk tag – but to me, this is just damned fine music, and something I want to hear a lot more of.
