The Shake Up
Something a little different for you avid readers. This 5 piece, all male band hail from San Bernardino, California. Justin, the lead singer contacted us here at Loud-Stuff and asked if we could take a look at the goods. Taken from the bands biography on their Facebook page they say, "Coming from a town where Hip-Hop and Hard-core music reign, come a group who are no strangers to this harsh music scene. The Shake Up is a band that refuses to let that element stop them from breaking out". Inspiring words right there about not giving up, let’s see what this Punk/Pop/Rock band from the states have got to offer.
Delirium Tremens was the first track on the EP. A simple guitar riff accompanied by punk rock style vocals fill the air to start the ball rolling. The drums are soon introduced and are instantly blended into the mix to create a catchy tune that soon had me tapping my toes and making me want to jump around. The tempo to the track is at a standard punk rock level. The chorus is mildly addictive and is a real crowd pleaser allowing you to follow along. I liked the way the guys slowed things down so it’s just the drum beat, orchestrating the vocals without the guitars, to me it helps the track evolve from a good track to a beast of a track.
A distorted guitar riff picks Right Coast Envy up off the floor and carries it along until the drums join in, adding depth and a sense of volume to the tune. The pace is slightly faster than the previous track but relinquishes slightly as the vocals enter the fray. However parity is soon restored and the track hurtles along in typical punk rock fashion. The vocals are fresh and sound awesome; they complement the impeccable skills demonstrated by the mouth-watering combination of guitars and drums in tandem. Similar to the first track, the guys play with the tempo a lot, adding different riffs and hooks, therefore building layer after layer to make a top tune.
An eerie mellow guitar riff changes the mood and brings you down from the upbeat tunes from the previous two tracks. The vocals are noticeably softer, adapted to the style of the track. This was a fine touch as it shows that the guys are able to adapt to different styles and still pull it off with a seemingly lack of effort. Despite the tempo being slower, there’s still a pleasant beat and tune to the track that keeps you on your toes. When I was listening to this track bands such as All Time Low came to mind, I liked the different style of track, there’s definitely nothing wrong with a bit of variety. The simplicity of the track is another reason why it works so well, the riffs are chilled and thought out and the drum beat is prominent throughout, without setting the world alight. The Last Thing I Do is a really top effort.
Best Kept Secret was the last track on the list. A similar start to The Last Thing I Do greets us with a lone guitar riff, keeping to the melodic theme. It is a little bit faster paced and with the introduction of the drums, the track springs to life that little bit more. The tune is catchy and I found myself nodding and tapping my feet to the beat. The vocals are really addictive and they sound awesome, just like the previous tracks. There’s a nice mid-section where things slow down and its almost crowd like chanting which is again something a little different than anything they guys have done in other tracks.
The foundations are well and truly in place for this band to go big. They have shown the ability to adapt to different styles and proven they are more than a one trick pony. This is a band that I would love to see live and look forward to hearing more from them in the future. Definitely one to look out for.
