The Wondergirls - Let's Go All The Way
Allow me to introduce you to The Wondergirls – a band formed back in 1999 by actor Ashley Hamilton (Firepower in Iron Man 3) who enlisted some help from some friends. Obviously this is the world of Hollywood we’re talking about here so these weren’t just any friends – step forward Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver), Mark McGarth (Sugar Ray), Ian Astbury (The Cult), Shannon Leto (30 Seconds To Mars), Jay Gordon (Orgy), Ryan Shuck (Orgy), Doug Ardito (Puddle Of Mudd), Ken Andrews (Failure), Martyn LeNoble (Porno For Pyros), and Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens Of The Stone Age) – not a bad line up I’m sure you’ll agree! Stepping forward, the band recorded two tracks, Let’s Go All The Way and Drop That Baby, but unfortunately complications got in the way, and the band was unable to release the tracks – and it was over.
Luckily for us, now in 2013, The Wondergirls are back! Still with Ashley Hamilton on vocal duties, Hamilton has recruited Jay Gordon, Chris Lloyd (former VP/A&R executive at Flip Records) and Doug Ardito to keep things going and to push on towards the release of their first EP. Further to this, having landed a role in Iron Man 3 as Jack Taggart, The Wondergirls have also had their single, Let’s Go All The Way (a cover of the Sly Fox 80’s track), featured on the soundtrack for the movie, Heroes Fall, alongside artists including Imagine Dragons and Neon Trees. Even going so far as to recruit Robbie Williams to feature on the track – The Wondergirls are stepping forwards now to take the world by storm – so what of the single?
Whilst it’s fair to say that the original Sly Fox version of the track had its own unique character and approach, The Wondergirls have taken things to a new level. Kicking into a bass heavy mix of haunting vocals and electronic effects before ushering in a blisteringly chunky guitar line, the track sounds as fresh as you’d like, and more than worthy of superhero status. Catchy and upbeat from the word go, it’s striking how the band have taken a track, pushed the original sound to one side, and used their collective understanding of music to firmly stamp their own take on it, resulting in something that you’re going to have to hear to believe.
Aside from the impressive track on offer, it’s also striking how they’ve taken the familiar vocals of Williams, combined them with Hamiltons and crafted a heavy assed sound, moving away from the usual pop-orientated style stuff you would expect to hear from Williams in particular, and showing that Hamilton has the prowess to succeed as well on the music scene as in the world of movies. Combined with the sludgy and powerful guitar work, thundering bass rhythms and straight up drum work, this track stands out as a hell of an achievement in its own right without even considering the names that have contributed towards it – suggesting to me for certain, that The Wondergirls are here, they’re ready, and they’re a band we can’t afford to ignore.
It would be easy to go into a track like this with a pre-designed idea of what you’ll be in for and the sort of sound you’ll be presented with, but go into it open minded and the result is mind blowing. Ignore the Iron Man 3 links, ignore the star studded line up, focus on the music and sound you’re hearing. This is a band that after hearing one track from, I’ve fallen in love with, want to see live and know we’re going to be hearing more from – in short – this is a band you need to hear.
