Then The Wave Came
We were recently contacted by Then The Wave Came, a band who describe themselves as ‘bludgeoning cerebral death metal for those whom like having their head fucked’ – which is an interesting way to sell themselves! Based in Kent, these guys are out there producing their own take on death metal and getting it out there to be heard, and seeing as we featured them on our first ever compilation album, I thought it was only right we get something by way of a review posted as well! As such, Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you ‘Of Things To Come’ from Then The Wave Came.
Opening with This Will Not End Well (For You) there’s a strange sense created, almost soft at first but with suggestions that what is to follow will not continue to be this soft and melodic! Soon enough everything becomes clear as a roar signals the beginning of distortion, throwing in a guitar line to build into things and continuing to build on the darkness, continuing to create a sense that things are about to get very very heavy indeed – and they do! As soon as the track begins fully we’re launched into a melee of hammering guitar lines, roving drum beats and guttural roars, all creating a sound which isn’t just going to grab your attention to make you listen, it’s going to force its way into your head whether you want it to or not! Alternating the pace from slow to fast it’s impossible not to become involved with this track, the power obliterating every other thought from your mind and keeping you listening.
Ripped From The Womb Of The Architect follows on, once again creating a sound which is insanely heavy but also full of funky hooks to keep you involved in things. Layering the vocals with varying styles adds in another dimension to this track, creating a sound which is going to both pleasure and punish at the same time, once again continuing to raise the bar for themselves as if to show that there’s a hell of a lot more still to come. It’s always striking when a band whack together a heavy track, but when they back it up with solid musicianship and skill it becomes even more potent, and that’s what you’ve got here from start to finish.
The Day The Sky Turned To Stone comes next to close the EP (and is available on our downloadable compilation) and once again adds a whole new take on things to the mix. Sounding almost syncopated at times, this is a track which harks more towards the prog style of music than it does death metal, adding in intricate guitar work and interesting drum fills to create a sound which is not only interesting, but advanced. Couple this with mind melting breakdowns and you’ve got a track which stands out as a serious highpoint, and the one which I would personally class as my favourite. Closing the EP in style, there’s nothing left to say but wow, that was three tracks of pure genius….so where can I get more?
I always think it’s striking when a band can produce music which keeps you engaged from start to finish without a single distraction, and that’s what’s happened here. Throughout the three tracks from Then The Wave Came there wasn’t a single thought in my mind other than the band and the music, and even now I’m really struck by it. Sure there’s heavy, but when you listen to what’s going on there’s also a lot of intricate musicianship going on, something which can often be lost in the mix. This is a band to get out and check out on the live scene for sure, definitely one to watch.
