They're Coming To Get You Barbara - Outside Face
We featured They’re Coming To Get You Barbara a while back, so when they put us onto their latest track, Outside Face, I was looking forward to seeing what they’d been up to since our last visit. With an interest in sexy women, strong liquor and scrabble, this is a band who work hard to get their name out there, constantly pushing the boundaries of their music and striving to get it out there to a bigger audience….so what of the new track?
Kicking into a distorted melee of hammering guitar lines powered up by heavy assed drums and bass rhythms, this track gets going as it means to go on – hard and heavy. Somehow managing to keep a sense of melody at the forefront of the track, we’re led through the mix by the soaring vocals, the track continuing to offer up a distorted yet easy to listen to style throughout. Sung vocals combine with roaring for the chorus, adding in a sense of catchiness to bolster things further, resulting in a track which is heavy, catchy, and comes across as the sort of thing which is going to go down a storm on the live scene.
I remember first checking out They’re Coming To Get You Barbara a while back, and at the time thinking to myself that they had a lot of potential, and with this new track, they seem to have fully realised it. From catchy choruses to thundering breakdowns, this track has it all. Definitely a band I want to get out to see live at some point, make sure you check this one out.

They're Coming To Get You Barbara
They’re Coming To Get You Barbara got in touch recently, letting us know about their self titled EP released on the 20th of April 2012 (which by the way was an awesome day as it was my Birthday….so there!). Drawing influence from the likes of Black Stone Cherry, Pulled Apart By Horses and Muse, these guys work hard to deliver a sound full of raw vocals, hooky guitars, driving bass and solid drums – which all sounds pretty cool to me! Based on everything they’d said, and the fact that they recorded and produced the record themselves, I was looking forward to checking out what was on offer from these guys!
Opening with title track We’re Coming For You Barbara we’re introduced to the album slowly, the plinky plonky sounds getting things underway and marching us into the album, suggesting that what is going to follow is going to be dark, heavy, and something spectacular to behold. As Back Up (It’s Fucking War) takes the lead we’re shown the true colours of the band, kicking into being with a hammering drum line and intricate guitar section, the mix forming into an upbeat, heavy mix of melody and rhythm, and showing that rock is alive and doing damned well. Ushering in powerful vocals to fully complete the track, this is a track which doesn’t hold any punches and makes sure you’re listening from the word go until the second the track comes to a close. Despite the heavy approach to the mix, there’s a real sense of melody and accessibility running through the mix here, the track leading you by the hand and forming into something you’re singing along to before you know it, the sign of a solid track for sure.
Moving on to Filth Like You we’re once again treated to the solid, southern rock stylings of the band and ushered into another groove orientated track full of hammering guitars, roving bass lines and pounding drums. The vocals take the lead here, leading you through the track and telling the story the band are trying to convey, once again luring you in to listen harder before hammering into the hard hitting chorus section of the track. There’s once again a seriously catchy edge to this track, only this time it’s rooted in the live scene, producing the sort of sound you know you’re going to love when these guys come to a town near you. Hold Steady Now is further testament to the bands live ability, hammering out a track which starts on an electronic note but moves on to show just how accomplished a unit we’re dealing with. Full of catchy hooks and guitar lines which will leave you a drooling heap on the floor, the feeling conveyed through this track is emotional, catchy, powerful, and one which will stay with you for a hell of a long time to come. Standing out as my own personal favourite track from the EP, this is a track which is going to become a live anthem for the band, and a track that once you’ve heard it, you’ll be humming it for days to come.
Closing with Shake The Earth Tonight we’re shown one final hurrah with a track which harks towards a combination of southern rock and classic metal. The guitars and bass are once again the cornerstones of the track, building up the solid vocals and resulting in a track which is going to get you dancing – not moshing, dancing! The feeling here is of good fun, beer drinking, sun shining outside live music – a feeling that we all love, and something which is going to stand these guys out as a band to check out, a force to be reckoned with, and an act you can’t afford to miss.
With a name like They’re Coming To Get You Barbara the band don’t give a lot away about their style, but the music they produce more than makes up for it. From start to finish this is an EP which is going to sit you back and force you to listen, leaving you with no doubt that when it comes to real rock music, these guys understand how to do it, and are out there doing it damned well! Please come to a town near me soon, I reckon this is going to be a live band not to miss!
