Uproot Chaos - NEW!
We featured Irish ‘metalzzzzzz’ unit before when they first got in touch, so when they dropped me a line the other day letting me know about a new track, The Fate Of Men, I was most interested to check out what they’d been up to. As a ‘preview’ track so to speak of their release which they’re currently working on, I figured it was only right I have a listen to see where their sound was going, how they were getting on, and what to expect from their new offerings!
Launching into a hammering melee of distorted guitars, pounding drums and pummeling bass lines, the track adopts an almost thrash style approach as it kicks in, immediately grabbing your attention and pulling you in. Breaking things down as the vocals kick in, there’s no mistaking the almighty raw power behind this track, the sort of sound which sounds like it should, like the actual band playing it. Alternating from the raw power through to a more melodic and chilled out (if that’s the right word!) chorus section, this is one which holds both raw power and more ‘sing along’ style moments, suggesting that this is one for the live scene for sure. Personally, I prefer the all out power moments of things here, but as a whole the track works, and suggests that the upcoming stuff from Uproot Chaos is going to be another step up, and something else to make sure we check out.
The first time we checked out Uproot Chaos I said that they had a hell of a sound, and that’s something that’s remained the same for sure. What’s changed is their approach to producing it, honing their style down a little to result in a heavy assed mix sounding very much like thrash, but with a raw edge. Definitely a record I’ll be looking forward to checking out once it’s ready as personally, I think there’s some definite potential here once again.

Uproot Chaos
We were recently contacted by Irish band Uproot Chaos, to let us know about their EP, Time To Question. Having only formed in November of 2011, these guys are still pretty new to the scene, but the 3 piece are out there destroying live venues and converting people to their sound. Influenced by none other than Machine Head, Devil Driver and Cliff Burton, we figured we should be check out what was going on here!
Title track Time To Question opens proceedings for us, straight away launching into a sound which is full to the brim with aggression and power. Most striking has to be the opening of the vocals, signalling their arrival with a roar and launching us even further into the pit of devastation formed by their sound. Heavy riffs bombard you as the bass is kept high in the mix to take full effect, the rolling and pounding drums backing everything up and adding a sense of pace to things. Alternating the vocals between haunting chants and roaring, the track seems to go through movement after movement, all the time keeping things firmly based around the simple idea of heavy.
We Enter Long Lakes, Living And Dying follows on, once again not holding back for a second and launching us into a pit of pure death metal – it’s one hell of an opening. Picking the pace up even further to get things moving, this is beyond the heaviness of the previous track, somehow managing to create a sound which holds the power of death metal yet the melody of thrash or alternative, it’s a clever mix and one which is rarely achieved. Distillation (Of Our Fears) continues this idea as it comes into being, this time opening with a more laid back guitar line, still holding the ominous feeling of before but harking on the softer side of the spectrum. Don’t be deceived though as this laid back approach doesn’t last for long, the bass ushering in the drums which in turn leads to the track taking full form. Heavy yet more restrained than previous tracks, this darkness from the track results in a sound which is just as menacing and forboding as the previous ones, leaving you with no doubt that this is a band who have got one clear message – all out power!
Closing with Slave New World (a Sepultura Cover which has to be a brave move!) the band take one final moment to show what they can do. This track is one which they play live so it seemed to make sense to add it on here, and my word they manage to pull it off! Ok, the vocals are different to those that you would hear from Max, but that makes it their own rather than simply a cover. Closing with a track from a band like Sepultura is a brave move, but a move which could well endear these guys to a lot of people!
Uproot Chaos have got one hell of a sound, taking different elements from different genres and crafting a sound which can’t be put into a specific genre – simply suffice to say it’s heavy! If you’re looking for an EP which is going to renew your faith in heavy assed music, pounding drum lines and guitars which will destroy the foundations of your house, then this could well be it!
