We Are Killing Ourselves (WAKO)
We were recently put onto We Are Killing Ourselves, a metal outfit based out of Almerin in Portugal who are out there creating their own brand of storming metal music. Having been on the go since 2001, the guys have shared stages with the likes of Soulfly, Sepultura, (Hed) pe, Moonspell, Municipal Waste, Slater, Megadeth and Paradise Lost…..which isn’t too bad going now is it?! The guys dropped us a line suggesting we might want to have a listen to some of their stuff, and based on their resume, I figured that they were probably right, so hit play to see what was going on!
As Ship Of Fools gets the selection of tracks moving for us it’s easy to see why these guys have had the supporting slots they have, their sound is heavy from the word go and doesn’t hold back until the moment the track comes to a close. Powerful guitars work with a bass heavy rhythm section to back up the roaring vocal line, the mix forming the sort of thing which you know is going to be simply awesome on the live scene. Raw and in your face throughout, this is the sort of track which sets a band up as one to watch, the sort of track which oozes with power, distortion, and reminds us why it is we started listening to metal in the first place. Drifting Beyond Reality continues this style further, once again launching us into a hammering melee of distorted elements whilst still managing to keep a sense of melody and movement at the forefront of the mix. Powerful yet accessible, this is another track which sounds like it’s been custom built for the live scene, the sort of thing which is heavy, but easy to listen to. Powerful riffs back up soaring lead lines, pounding double bass drums and more of that roving bass, then the vocals kick in to elevate the whole mix to a whole new level of distortion and devastation – if you’re not hooked onto these guys yet then there’s something wrong with you!
Extispicium once again raises the bar for the guys, this time launching us into a fast paced mix of hammering guitar lines and roaring vocal moments – it’s heavy, in your face, and full on – but is oh so good! This is the sort of track which once again allows you to see why it is they’ve had the supporting slots they have, they’re a force to be reckoned with and a band which I think we’re going to be hearing a lot more of. Syncopated elements combine with the heavy power and show us the technical side of the band behind the scenes, reaffirming their ownership over your eardrums and keeping you listening until the second it comes to a close. Finishing the selection (for the purposes of review) with The Shadows Collapse Within, the band once again manage to show off their style, manage to hammer out another track which is ear bleedingly heavy, and remind us what proper metal sounds like. Raw and the sort of thing which will leave venues as nothing but dust, the closing moments for us here leave no doubt that WAKO are one of those bands that we need to be paying attention to, one of those bands we’ll be hearing a lot more about, and one of those bands who are destined to change the face of metal with their own unique approach.
We Are Killing Ourselves are a band that have caught me a little off guard, as to be completely honest I never had Portugal down as a place to offer us up metal of this calibre. From start to finish there’s a display of all out force on show here, and we only covered a few tracks from the choices on their Facebook page. Make sure you get out there and check these guys out, I reckon you’re going to like what you hear.
