When We Were Wolves
When We Were Wolves are described as having fashioned a brand of post-hardcore that will blast its way through your skull, pull at your heartstrings, and truly make you think, all in one sitting – which sounds like something pretty impressive to me. As such, when Garry from SAN PR recently dropped us a line about their debut record, The More Things Change, The More We Stay The Same, due out on the 14th of January 2013, I was looking forward to seeing what was going on. Having already shared stages with the likes of Bury Tomorrow, Exit Ten, Pay No Respect and Carcer City, these guys are already out there developing their reputation, so what of the record?
As the record gets going with All Good People Must Come To An End we’re lured into a strange place, a place where things are almost soft and soothing, yet there’s a sense that there’s more to come. As roaring vocals come into add a different level, the mix begins to form around you, showing what we can expect and letting us know that in actual fact, this is going to be far from soft. Continuing to build around you, the drums gradually lead us towards the inevitable smash in the face, coming in the form of Under The Water and immediately setting the bar for the rest of the album. Heavy guitars are backed up by roaring vocals and pummelling basslines whilst the syncopated drums add in a sense of technical ability. The track is heavy for sure, but the edge of complexity adds in a different elements, almost allowing the track to sound melodic at times whilst still packing one hell of a punch. The chorus of this track reminded me instantly of Atreyu in its form, offering up the sort of thing which will get you singing along whilst at the same time, managing to make you want to get down to a show and dive head first into a pit – it’s a great start to the record for sure.
This Is Where We Belong continues the hard hitting approach once again, not messing about with any introduction and instead, launching us straight into a melee of hammering guitar work, pounding drumlines and more of those awesome vocals. This is the sort of track which you know is going to ignite a venue, the sort of thing which will get pits moving, people begging for more, and a serious reputation built for the band. Going from strength to strength as it progresses, this track stands out as my own personal favourite off of the record, and one which I would highly recommend you check out if you get a chance. Your Sick Fantasy comes a close second, once again launching straight into a hard hitting track designed to remind you of how heavy hardcore can sound when the band know what they’re doing. Rolling drums combine with distorted and down tuned guitars to form a sound which is deep, powerful, and perfectly formed for live shows once again. Add in a chorus which is once again going to get you singing along and what you’ve got here is a winning recipe, the sort of thing which works on both the live and recorded front, and the sort of thing which people are waiting for on the scene.
Closing with Hounds (ft. Phil Cross) we finish on another soothing opening before building up to the crescendo of the record, leaving the listener with no doubt that it’s been one hell of a ride and knowing that there’s going to be a lot more to come from these guys. The final moments here are amongst the heaviest, and most melodic moments of the album, leaving no doubt that these guys know exactly what they’re doing, and what they’re doing is all good.
Post-hardcore is one of those genres that seems to be getting a lot of attention at the moment, and the downside to that is that there’s a lot of bands who claim to be doing it well yet in actual fact, sound pretty damned generic. That’s not the case here, as When We Were Wolves have taken things to a new level and shown us just what a band can sound like when they understand what they want to achieve, and showing how they’re going to do it. This record is one which is not only fresh sounding and well accomplished, but it’s one which is sure to have people coming back for more – this is a band to check out, and a band to keep a serious eye on.
