When Words Fail
We were recently contacted by Garry from SAN PR about When Words Fail, a Post-Hardcore band from Swindon in the UK. With their debut EP Eyes on Everything due to be released in December, I jumped at the chance to hear these guys before everyone else, so figured I should get something written down!
Opening with Eyes on Everything, the scene is immediately set dark yet insanely melodic, a lead line taking over everything and leading into gravelly and powerful vocals whilst hammering drums, bass and riffs underpin everything. Adopting a pounding beat, there’s a lot going on here to take on at first listen, it’s melodic yet heavy, somehow managing to create a sound which is massively heavy due to the pounding double bass pedal whilst keeping everything melodic through the vocals. As the track progressed I found myself enjoying it more and more, new elements always being there to be found whilst the sanctity of the track is retained – it continues as it starts out yet always makes sure it’s kept interesting and alive. As the track approaches its conclusion, different levels of vocals add further depth, the guitars and drums continue to pound and the whole track fully takes form – this is one serious introduction to a band and I for one am fully on board for the journey!
Over Again comes in at number 2, opening heavier than the previous track initially before once again kicking into a soaring lead line underpinned by those drums which I’ve come to love already. The vocals take on a far more frantic approach to proceedings this time around and make sure you’re listening to what’s going on, alternating between dirty and dark before becoming almost soothing and reflective as they kick into the chorus sections. If you want a track which summarises this band then this is the track for you – it’s as close to perfection as I’ve come across for a while with the music matching the level of production on the album to create a professional, refined and somehow raw sound, it’s like listening to pure energy in musical form.
Final track There’s Something closes off the EP and leaves you with one question – how soon can I get a copy of this album for myself! Adopting an almost funky approach to things this time, the riff hammers the track down into your soul and makes you want to move along to it. The vocals once again rotate between distorted and gravelly to soothing and soft in the chorus. The progression on the track is noteworthy as well, creating a track which you almost feel you’ve heard before whilst somehow sounding unique and fresh, it’s a lot to take on board at first. As the track comes to a close I found myself reaching for the button to put the whole lot back to the beginning, just to make sure I hadn’t missed anything.
When Words Fail have shocked me, in a good way obviously! Their music is melodic enough to appeal to masses of people, yet retains a sense of heaviness which will make even the most hardcore fan consider it as something they should listen to. Their tracks are well written and demonstrate the bands ability to craft songs which progress logically without becoming predictable, all in all forming something which is pretty special to hear. I for one can’t wait to see what comes next as based on this 3 track EP, big things are on the way!
