Wolfshead
We featured Wolfshead a while back, so when Mart got in touch about their new track, Sword Of Fire, we were looking forward to seeing what was on offer from the guys. To top off the new track, the chaps are giving you the chance to download the track for free, simply by using the link below – which sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me! Following the usual method of things, I figured I’d hit play, check out what was on offer, then let you lovely people get your hands on the track to see if you agree!
Opening with a sludgy guitar line, the track immediately gets off to a southern rock style pumping line, dragging you in kicking and screaming and unleashing merry hell on your ear drums. Fast paced, raw and powerful, the opening moments of this track set this up as something to hear, and that’s just the introduction! Layering the track with hard hitting vocals, rumbling bass and more drums than you can shake a (drum) stick at, the track continues its rock orientated approach, keeping things funky and hard hitting from start to finish. It’s clear that Wolfshead have been working hard since we last checked them out, showing off a real sense of energy and determination throughout the track and setting them up perfectly for what is going to come next for them, something I can’t wait to see.
To me, this is a track which I’m going to have to see live as I think it’s going to hold even more power on the live scene, it’s got that real raw edge which powers a track up to a different level, stands it out and makes it something which you want to chant along to, throw some mad shapes to and generally enjoy to the max.
I liked Wolfshead the first time we heard them, and I’m pleased to say that this new track has only compounded my love for their music. This is rock/metal at its finest, showing that sometimes, when a band keeps things simple and does what they want to do, the result can be fantastic!

Wolfshead
The guys in Wolfshead recently dropped us a line about their self titled EP, to see what we thought of things. Formed in Hampshire, the guys like to smash hard rock and doom together to create what they call a ‘delightful noise known as garage doom’ – which sounds pretty cool to me. Formed in 2010, the guys have consumed beer, wine and music to produce the 4 tracks we see before us, so how does it sound?
The opening moments of Warbringer certainly suggest damned good things from the guys, crafting a sound which is heavy yet somehow funky and moving. The al out rocking guitar line which mashes together with the pounding drum line will get you involved, make you want to hear more and keep you excited about what you’re hearing, it’s a clever mix and it’s done well. I really like the combination of sounds which the guys have managed to achieve here, it’s heavy without being over bearing and at the same time, accessible enough to get a lot of new fans interested in what’s going on. The Garden continues this theme, this time adding in more of a sense of sludge to turn their sound into something even more insane, even more heavy. The slow pace further accentuates the raw power of the track here, resulting in a sound which is going to get your head banging, your fist in the air and the beer consumed. Moving more towards the doom side of things through the vocal lines, this dark approach to rock is one which I’m quite liking so far!
Pissin’ Blood follows on and keeps that funky edge rolling through things, once again managing to craft a sound which is heavy and yet accessible to new ears. This is a track which is going to work better on the live scene than on a record, but at the same time it’s working here – the whole time making you imagine what you’d see if you were to see this being played out to you. Powerful, funky and somehow catchy, this is a serious highpoint on the EP, and a track which I know I’ll be coming back to. Closing with Death Priest there’s one final nod towards the sludgier side of things, once again managing to create a track which is mind blowingly heavy whilst keeping that hard rock vibe running through it. This track is my personal favourite from the selection, somehow encapsulating the sound of the band and giving you a track which will have you converted to the ranks of Wolfshead within moments.
This is a mighty fine EP, and I think that’s largely down to the creativity of Wolfshead and the work they’ve put into it. It’s not stereotypical because it doesn’t follow convention, instead carving a new path into rock and metal which you can either embrace or discard – my personal recommendation though is to give it a chance and jump on board – you won’t be disappointed!
